• Foals - for initial care and development. Iron requirement in newborn foals is high and suckling foals receive only 10% of their actual requirement from the mares milk. Orthopaedic problems can be attributed to low levels of trace elements particularly copper. Diarrhoea in foals can lead to loss of trace elements and electrolytes.
• Brood mare - post foaling. Reserves of trace elements such as copper and iron in pre natal foals build up in the 10th and 11th month of pregnancy. Copper reserves are stored in the liver and deplete quickey after birth when they are required for blood formation.
